Fill In The Blank: How Important is The WBC To You?

The World Baseball Classic started in 2006 in response to the Olympic committee removing baseball as a sport in 2005. The fifth WBC is underway this year and has been a fun watch. However, it seems as though some fans are way more into it than others.

Personally, I do not care about the event. I am a Yankees fan first and foremost and am such a nut job that I think all of my players will get hurt if they play. Others feel like this is the equivalent of the World Cup in soccer which I think is insane but I will respect their opinion.

Last night during the Puerto Rico vs. Dominican Republic game, Edwin Diaz was injured celebrating advancing to the quarterfinals of the WBC.

It was announced today that Edwin Diaz tore the patellar tendon in his right knee and will be out for the entire MLB season. Mets fans were up in arms about the event after the news.

I feel terrible for Mets fans. They just gave Edwin Diaz a 5 year $102 million contract in the offseason and seemingly can never catch a break.

On Twitter I threw out this question:

In the last hour I’ve received 62 responses to the question. 41 of the 62 people answered a 3 or less to the question meaning they do not care about the event. However, 14 of the 62 people answered an 8 or higher. It seems as though fans of the South American teams care more than other which makes sense. Baseball is more of a regional sport in the United States. Football reigns supreme in the USA and it’s tough to really get into the WBC when you have guys like Scherzer, Cole and Verlander sitting it out because they’re more interested in chasing a World Series.

Personally I’m happy that the Yankees only player in the WBC is backup catcher Kyle Higashioka. There is no happy medium when it comes to the WBC. Either you are in or you’re out. I am out.

Have a good one,

Jimmy

  1. Nice Post!!!!! The World Baseball Classic is very important to me because so many of the players who I like are playing and it is so great seeing them play for their country. I can’t believe the injury that came for Edwin Diaz. He is the greatest closer in MLB. He was just trying to celebrate a win!! Why does this have to happen to him? How did he hurt it celebrating? Did his knee give way? I really hope Edwin Diaz gets better soon. The New York Mets won’t be the same team without the best closer. Get Well Soon Edwin Diaz!!!! Can you please come and read my blog?
