The Yankees Won…..But It Still Felt Miserable

The Yankees won on Tuesday night, but it didn’t feel like much of a victory. Ben Rice came through in the 9th with a huge home run and Devin Williams slammed the door. On paper, it’s a solid 5–4 win over a division rival. But watching it? Absolutely exhausting.

Anthony Volpe made another throwing error. His 13th of the season. That ties him for the most in Major League Baseball. It’s also his second error in two games. This isn’t a cold stretch anymore. This isn’t the same confident shortstop we saw last season. Something is off. He looks hesitant. The throws are rushed. It’s a real concern.

Johnny Meatballs, formerly known as Johnny Lasagna, has now allowed a run in five straight outings. That’s not just a bad stretch. That’s a pattern. He does not look like someone you can trust in a high-leverage situation, especially in October. Yet here he is, continuing to get the ball.

Luke Weaver keeps getting called on to clean up everyone else’s mistakes. He has become the bullpen janitor. He comes in, calms things down, and keeps the game from falling apart. It’s not always pretty, but he’s doing his job better than most.

Cam Schlittler, in just his second career start, was actually really solid. He gave up two runs over five innings, scattered seven hits, and even touched 99.5 mph. That’s a huge development for this pitching staff. If he keeps showing that kind of poise, he might earn some real trust down the stretch. He could also be a trade chip.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. set the tone early with a three-run homer in the first inning off Max Scherzer. It was a no-doubt shot and the kind of jolt this offense badly needed. That moment should have felt like a spark, but the team’s sloppy play later made it feel more like a wasted gift.

The Yankees won the game. But instead of feeling hyped, fans are left shaking their heads. This team finds new ways to make you anxious. They can’t just win clean. There always seems to be a mistake, a misplay, or a meltdown waiting to happen.

So yes, the Yankees are back in the win column. But if this is what winning feels like, losing is going to be brutal.
