Predicting the Yankees 25 Man ALDS Roster

With October right around the corner, it’s time to start forecasting what the Yankees ALDS 25-man roster might be. Obviously, there are a lot of questions that need to be answered, health wise, but let’s operate under the assumption that everyone is ready to go.

1. Gary Sanchez

2. Austin Romine

3. DJ LeMahieu

4. Gleyber Torres

5. Didi Gregorius

6. Gio Urshela

7. Luke Voit

8. Edwin Encarnacion

9. Aaron Judge

10. Brett Gardner

11. Aaron Hicks

12. Giancarlo Stanton

What’s fascinating about this construction is that two of this group will not be in the starting lineup. My sense is that Gardner and Gio will be the odd men out in this equation with Romine, of course. However, both of them should be late inning defensive replacements for Stanton and Voit/EE, respectively, while DJLMHU slides over to first.

13. Masahiro Tanaka

14. Domingo German

15. James Paxton

16. Luis Severino

17. CC Sabathia

18. Aroldis Chapman

19. Zack Britton

20. Adam Ottavino

21. Tommy Kahnle

22. Dellin Betances

23. Chad Green

24. Nestor Cortes Jr.

That 25th roster spot seems to be very up in the air at the moment. The Yankees philosophy points towards an extra pitcher being brought onboard. So, that would eliminate Clint Frazier, Mike Tauchman, Cameron Maybin and Tyler Wade from being part of the postseason fold.

On the pitching side of the coin, the following are considerations: Cory Gearrin, J.A. Happ, Luis Cessa, Jonathan Loaisiga and Chance Adams. I guess Gearrin should be the guy in this group, but I have a sneaky feeling that Cessa could get the nod.

However, I want the final spot to go to someone not yet mentioned – Deivi Garcia. Garcia, whom the Yankees refused to deal for pitching reinforcements, should be the 25th man on the Yankees ALDS roster; provided he performs capably during his September audition. Also, another potential wrinkle in this is that Garcia isn’t currently on the 40-man roster. The Yankees will need to make room for him to make this a possibility. Regardless, I want the kid to make an impact on the Yankees quest for 28.
