Yesterday, prior to the Devils game vs. the Rangers, Ray Shero pulled the trigger on a trade involving Ben Lovejoy. The devils sent the defensive defenseman to Dallas for a 3rd round pick and Connor Carrick. A young right handed defenseman making his return from an injury sustained earlier this year.
Ray Shero’s haul in this trade was quite good. Turning Lovejoy into a 3rd round pick in the upcoming deep draft as well as player that should be able to slot into our lineup immediately.
We wish nothing but the best to Lovejoy. He helped solidify the bottom defensive pairing on the Devils while helping young players like Santini and Butcher develop their game in the NHL. With that being said, Shero now has nine draft picks in this upcoming draft. With Shero still looking to move Marcus Johansson, it would be hard to imagine he will use all those picks on draft day.
I would expect Shero to use some of those extra draft picks as ammo to acquire some big names this offseason. So far, Shero is nailing this trade deadline. Coming off a playoff year in 2017-18, it’s a tough pill to swallow but these rebuilds take time and injuries have not helped this year.
I will be checking twitter about every 5 minutes for news on Marcus Johansson. Now that some of the bigger names are starting to move, I would expect a deal to be made relatively soon.
