Yankees Wild Card Preview Breakdown

Breathe. Breathe again. Ok good. Tonight you might not be able to do much of that. It’s the Wild Card game and ultimately you will have that feeling of nervous rage throughout the game. But that is okay. It is the card we were dealt. Now we have to murder the Twins.

Forget everything that happened this year. Aaron Judge being the best hitter in baseball, Luis Severino being dominant, everyone counting us out from the very beginning. NONE of that matters today. The only thing that matters is a W. So how does Joe build this lineup? It’s a good problem to have, but there are 11 viable options for 9 spots. My lineup would be:

  1. LF Brett Gardner
  2. RF Aaron Judge
  3. C Gary Sanchez
  4. SS Didi Gregorious
  5. 2B Starlin Castro
  6. 1B Greg Bird
  7. 3B Chase Headley
  8. CF Aaron Hicks
  9. DH Jacoby Elsbury

My thought process. Play the hottest hitters. Yes I understand that Chase Headley isn’t as good as Todd Frazier when it comes to fielding, but he ultimately has the better bat. Leaving Matt Holliday on the bench was tough but Jacoby is on fire. And I put Hicks in CF because he is the better fielder the Elsbury.

Severino needs to be Luis Severino. I want 6 innings of no run baseball. When Brian Dozier is the best hitter on the Twins you have to like your chances with Sevy. Am I nervous that we have a second year player in a do-or-die situation? Of course! Is he the best option? ABSOLUTELY.

Girardi needs to be able to control his urges with the bullpen. His leash is usually short, so I can’t even imagine how insane he will drive us tonight. But at the end of the day, there’s a reason we are playing at home. The Yankees are the better team. They SHOULD win this game. And I think they will.

Prediction: Yankees 7 Twins 3
