The Sabres announced a pair of transactions on Monday. The team has signed D Justin Falk to a one-year extension worth $650,000. Due to the plethora of injuries to Buffalo’s defense corps, Falk has played for more than what was probably planned this year. Though the 28-year-old has posted just four points this season, he has been a pleasant surprise defensively, giving 61 hits and posting an even +/- rating. Though I’d much rather have the Justin Faulk with a u in his name, Falk has been solid for Buffalo this year.
The second move is far more intriguing. In a figurative role-reversal of a move last month, the Sabres reclaimed C Derek Grant on waivers from the Nashville Predators. Buffalo waived Grant on January 11 and he was taken by the Preds, who waived him on Sunday after weeks of serving as a healthy scratch.
Grant has played in 41 games this season, registering four assists. The Sabres are in need of depth on the fourth line and Grant was a cheap and ready option. Nicolas Deslauries has served as center on the grind line for the last two games, a position he has never played. Grant, who has been assigned to the Amerks, can fill that void and allow D-Lo to return to the wing.
The Sabres are in action tonight in Newark against Taylor Hall and the Devils. New Jersey swept a home-and-home against Buffalo back in early November. The Sabres are hoping they can ride a red-hot Robin Lehner (79 saves in his last two games) to a second straight win. That coupled with a regulation loss for the Maple Leafs against the Islanders would put Buffalo three points back of the second Eastern Conference Wild Card spot.
Puck drop is in an hour and a half on MSG. It’s a must win, don’t miss it!
